NY insurance license renewal and CE: a checklist for agency owners

A lapsed license means a licensed person who can't do licensed work. Track it like a renewal date.

Short answer

A New York producer license lasts up to two years and expires on the holder's birthday. It can be renewed online up to 180 days before it expires, and must be renewed before that date or it lapses. Renewal needs 15 CE credits once the license is over two years old, including 1 hour each of Insurance Law, ethics, and diversity and bias, plus 1 hour of flood for P&C licensees.

The owner's checklist

  1. List every licensed person with their license number, lines and expiration date.
  2. Set a reminder 180 days out, when renewal opens.
  3. Check CE credits 90 days out. Leave time to finish missing hours.
  4. Confirm the renewal in the DFS license search after it's filed.
  5. Pause licensed work for anyone whose license lapses until it's active again.

Who pays for CE?

Covering CE and renewal fees is a low-cost benefit. If you offer it, say so in the offer letter. It costs little and it's one more reason to stay.
