NY insurance license lookup: how to check a candidate before you hire

A two-minute search before the offer saves a hard conversation after it.

By the Humai team · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer

Use the NY DFS Producer/Licensee Search to look up a New York insurance license by name or license number. Check that the license is active, that it covers the right lines (property and casualty, or personal lines), and when it expires. For a nonresident or a multi-state candidate, also check their NPN in NIPR.

What to check

  1. The name matches. Compare it with the candidate's ID and résumé.
  2. The license is active. Not expired, not pending.
  3. The lines fit the job. A personal lines license doesn't cover commercial work. See personal lines vs. P&C.
  4. Agent or broker. They're different licenses with different roles. See agent vs. broker.
  5. The expiration date. New York licenses expire on the holder's birthday. Put the date on your calendar.
  6. Other states. If they'll serve clients outside New York, check those licenses in NIPR.

When to check

  • Before the offer. Don't make the license a surprise on day one.
  • Before AMS access. Confirm they can do licensed work before they touch client files.
  • Before each renewal date. A license must be renewed before it expires, or it lapses.

If the search shows nothing

DFS says a blank result means the license hasn't been issued. The candidate may have passed the exam but not finished the application. Ask for the license number, check NIPR, and hold licensed duties until it shows up.

Where Humai fits

Humai matches U.S.-licensed agents who hold New York licenses. Each one is checked in NIPR before they start, then works in your AMS under your agency's name.

Questions agency owners ask

How do I look up a New York insurance license?

Use the DFS Producer/Licensee Search on the DFS website. You can search by name or license number.

What if the search shows no results?

DFS says no results means the license hasn't been issued yet. Ask the candidate for their license number and check again, or contact DFS.

Does New York mail paper licenses?

No. DFS issues the license as a PDF, and the licensee prints it. You can ask a candidate for a copy, but the search is the record to trust.

Should I check NIPR too?

Yes for a nonresident or anyone licensed in more than one state. NIPR shows every state license tied to their NPN.

When should I check again?

Before you give AMS access, and before each license's expiration date. A license that isn't renewed on time expires.
