Florida insurance CE requirements: a checklist for agency owners

Miss CE in Florida and DFS can end the appointment. That stops the work.

By the Humai team · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer

Florida 2-20 and 20-44 licensees need 24 CE hours every two years: a 4-hour law and ethics update plus 20 elective hours, or 16 after 6 years licensed. A 4-40 customer representative needs 10: the 4-hour update plus 6 electives. If CE isn't certified, DFS may terminate or refuse to renew the person's appointments until it's done.

The update course must match the license held. Licensees with 25+ years and certain designations or degrees need fewer electives.

What happens if CE is missed

  • Appointments. DFS may immediately terminate or refuse to renew them.
  • No new appointment of the same or similar type until the CE is done.
  • Extensions. Up to one year, for good cause.

In practice: Florida requires an agent to be both licensed and appointed. Without an appointment, a licensed person can't do licensed work for you.

Check a Florida license

The DFS Licensee Search lets you search by name, license number or NPN. The detail page shows valid licenses, active appointments and each appointment's expiration date. For anyone licensed in other states, check NIPR too.

The owner's checklist

  1. List every licensed person with license type, number and appointment dates.
  2. Ask for a CE status screenshot from MyProfile 90 days before each cycle ends.
  3. Book the 4-hour update first. It's required for every license type.
  4. Recheck appointments in the Licensee Search after each cycle.
  5. Check new hires the same way before the offer.

Free tool: paste your job post and create an interview pack with a license and appointment check built in. About 3 minutes.
