Claims adjuster staffing and insurance claims BPO: what to check

Adjusting a claim and helping a client report one are different jobs, with different licenses.

By the Humai team · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer

A claims adjuster staffing agency supplies licensed adjusters to insurers and adjusting firms, often for catastrophes. An insurance claims BPO takes over claims processes such as intake, data entry and document handling. States set their own adjuster licensing rules, and Texas and Florida both offer emergency adjuster licenses after a catastrophe. Agency-side work, like helping a client report a claim, is a separate job.

Adjuster licensing basics

Each state sets its own adjuster rules. The NAIC publishes a model guideline that states may adopt. Two examples:

  • Texas: TDI licenses all-lines adjusters. Applicants pass a Pearson VUE exam or complete a TDI-approved course. The application fee is $50. After a catastrophe, TDI issues 90-day emergency adjuster licenses with a sponsor who is a licensed adjuster or insurer.
  • Florida: Statutes 626.874 lets DFS issue emergency adjuster licenses after a catastrophe, for people designated by an insurer or a licensed independent adjusting firm.

Questions to ask any claims vendor

  1. Are your adjusters licensed in the states of loss, and can we see their licenses?
  2. How fast can you deploy after a storm, and how many people?
  3. Who makes coverage decisions, and how are they reviewed?
  4. Do you work in our claims system or yours?
  5. How do you charge: per claim, per day or per hour?

The agency side of a claim

Insurance agencies don't adjust claims. They help the client report the loss, pass on the claim number, and follow up with the carrier. That work needs someone who knows the policy and can talk the client through it. See hurricane season staffing for planning the surge.
